SMBs: Target for Hackers

The 2020 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report suggests that more than 70% of cyber attackers target small to medium size businesses (SMBs).

Why Do Hackers Target SMBs?

For a few reasons, small to medium size businesses are easy targets for hackers, which is why they are the most vulnerable. First off, many of them are only using one layer of security, such as a firewall, antivirus, or backup. In reality, no single solution is 100% effective. With a single layer of defense, hackers are able to work around and attack businesses from their blind spots.  The key to eliminating as many vulnerability points as feasible is to layer all of your possible solutions.

Security awareness training is another area that SMBs tend to fall short in. Users are known to be the single biggest cybersecurity weakness because they simply don’t know what to look for. They don’t know how to identify suspicious activity, like phishing links or scams. Being able to identify skeptical behaviors is a vital component of an effective protection strategy. Furthermore, some hackers specialize in compromising specific business types or industries, and oftentimes strengthen their abilities with each new attack.
